Who We Are

MV Organics Recovery Committee

The Committee was founded in 2015 to address the then new waste ban regulation from the State of Massachusetts requiring all commercial food establishments producing more than 1 ton a week of food waste to seek alternative methods of disposal (as of Nov. 2022 that is now 1/2 a ton a week). Much research, many site visits, professional studies, and a few pilot projects led to the goal of using in vessel composters to process as much of the 6500 tons of food waste produced each year on MV.

In 2020 an engineering study was commissioned to evaluate the feasibility and costs for a centralized composting facility at the Regional District site in Edgartown. With costs just shy of $10 million, it was determined the best path to achieve regional composting was to have multiple decentralized operations.
